Officer Stipend Transparency

The Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) is committed to providing a clear and accessible overview of how officer stipends work, why they exist, and how they are funded.

Purpose

ASSU stipends exist to make student government service accessible to all students. Leadership roles require significant weekly time commitments, and stipends help ensure that students, especially those who might otherwise need to work, can fully participate in serving the Stanford community by providing modest financial support that helps offset this time commitment.

Funding

The Student Activities Fee does not fund officer stipends and has no impact on how much money is available to VSOs.

Stipends have remained consistent for at least the past eight years, as they are not indexed to inflation.

Who Receives Stipends

Stipends are provided to elected and appointed ASSU roles with ongoing responsibilities in the:

1. Executive Branch
2. Undergraduate Senate
3. Graduate Student Council
4. Elections Commission
5. Nominations Commission
6. Constitutional Council

Stipend amounts are determined based on the estimated weekly time commitment, the level of responsibility, and expected participation. Stipends may be prorated if an officer’s workload is reduced, responsibilities are not fulfilled, or the officer is studying abroad.

All stipend amounts and eligible roles are listed in the spreadsheet linked here. (Stanford Email Required)
